On Place, Community and Belonging

We are researching how young people studying in Manchester talk about their notions of ‘place’, ‘community’, and ‘belonging’. We are interested in talking to university students aged 18-25 years old, across all Higher Education Institutions in Greater Manchester (MMU, University of Manchester and University of Salford).


  • -Participants aged between 18-25
  • -Have previously or currently study at MMU, University of Manchester or the University of Salford
  • -Any level of study (BA (hons), MA, Msc, MBA, Phd etc.)
  • -Has previously or currently lives in Manchester

Ethical approval

This study has been approved by the Manchester Metropolitan University department of Arts and Humanities ethics committee on the 22nd May 2019.

About the researcher

This research is funded by Manchester Metropolitan University and conducted by Dr Khawla Badwan (Senior Lecturer in TESOL and Applied Linguistics), Dr Samantha Wilkinson (Senior Lecturer in Childhood and Youth Studies) and Elisha Hall (Sociologist & Assistant Researcher).
