Knowledge of English academic words

Academic words are used more often in academic speaking and writing irrespective of research discipline than in non-academic settings. This project examines the knowledge that Year 1 British-English native speaker and Mandarin-Chinese native speaker undergraduate university students have about English academic words. You will take a gap-fill test of English academic words, a multiple-choice test of English general words and you will fill in a questionnaire on your language learning history.

Requirements

  • native speaker of Mandarin Chinese or native speaker of British English
  • 18-29 years old
  • Year 1 undergraduate student in one of these departments: Essex Business School (focusing on marketing, finance or accounting); Biological Sciences; Computer Science; Government; History; Language and Linguistics; Law; Literature Film and Theatre Studies; Philosophy and Art History; Psychology; Sociology
  • Have not participated in this study before.
