Knowledge of English academic words

Academic words are used more often in academic speaking and writing irrespective of research discipline than in non-academic settings. This project examines the knowledge that Mandarin-Chinese native speaker and British English native speaker undergraduate university students have about English academic words. You will take a gap-fill test of English academic words, a multiple-choice test of English general words and you will fill in a questionnaire on your language learning history.


  • Year-1 undergraduate native speakers of Mandarin Chinese
  • 18-29 years old
  • Student in one of these departments:
  • Essex Business School (focusing on marketing, finance or accounting); Biological Sciences; Computer Science; Government; History; Language and Linguistics; Law; LiFTS, Mathematical Sciences, Psychology; Sociology
  • Have not participated in this study before.

Ethical approval

This study received ethical approval by the ethics officer of the Department of Language and Linguistics, University of Essex on 2 November 2016.
