Effects of Expressive Writing on Stressful and/or Traumatic Experiences

In our research we are looking into:
• expressive writing and its effect on stressful and/or traumatic life experiences
• assessing stress and trauma and their impact on person’s well-being
• how best to work with

Study workflow:
• Initial questionnaire (to assess study eligibility)
• 3 writing sessions (one writing session per week)
• Post-writing questionnaire (2 weeks after finishing the last writing session)
• Post writing questionnaire (2-3 months after finishing the last writing session)


  • Over 18 years old
  • Fluent in the English language;
  • Able to continuously write for 20 minutes;
  • Currently not undergoing psychotherapy (or any other form of therapy);
  • Not currently taking anti-depressant OR continuously have been taking anti-depressants for more than 3 months.

Ethical approval

This research has been given ethical clearance by the Ethics Committee of the University of Nottingham under reference 113-1809.
