The effects of nitrous oxide on thoughts and feelings in healthy people

You would be asked to complete a brief online and telephone screening. If eligible, you would come to UCL on one occasion. As part of the study you will be completing a series of questionnaires, inhaling either nitrous oxide or medical air, repeating some questionnaires during inhalation, and completing a final set of questionnaires after inhalation stops.


  • Men and Women
  • Aged 18 – 40 years
  • Fluent in English
  • Do NOT have any significant physical or mental health problems
  • Do NOT have cardiovascular conditions or other breathing problems
  • Have NOT had recent dental work
  • Do NOT regularly use any recreational drugs (other than alcohol, caffeine and nicotine)
  • (Please note that these are not the only criteria for taking part and you will need to undergo an online and telephone screening to confirm you are eligible to take part)
