The meaning of laughs, grunts, and other emotional vocalizations

11 December 2017

The voice carries a wealth of information, even if no words are spoken. From laughs to noncommital grunts, we use many nonverbal exclamations in our everyday interactions to indicate how we feel and what we intend to do. The purpose of this experiment is to learn more about how listeners interpret such emotional vocalizations. Your participation is completely anonymous. Completion time is 10-15 minutes. No specific eligibility requirements.

About the researcher

I am a PhD student in cognitive science at Lund University, Sweden. I'm looking at the way humans can express and interpret emotional states without using language (non-linguistic vocalizations such as laughing and screaming) - the informational content of such sounds, their universality and evolutionary roots.
