Early Maladaptive Schemas and Online Pornography Use

Often developed in childhood, early maladaptive schemas (EMS) are the lenses through which we see the world. They inform the way we understand ourselves, our relationships with others, and our emotional experiences. The activation of EMS is related to relationship problems, anxiety/mood difficulties, and patterns of problematic behaviours. This study aims to understand the relationship between EMS and online pornography use, and which EMS have the strongest association with pornography viewing.

The project has gone through the relevant NTU research ethics procedures and has been given a favourable ethics opinion by Nottingham Trent University’s Schools of Business, Law and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee in January 2024.
About the researcher
I am a Senior Clinical Psychologist and Schema Therapist in the NHS and a Doctoral Researcher at Nottingham Trent University. I am interested in the clinical applications of schema therapy in a wide range of emotional, personality, and mental health difficulties, as well as understanding the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and behavioural addictions.
