Coins, Museums, and the Norman Conquest

03 January 2017

This study looks at coins of King William the Conqueror and his successor William Rufus. The coins reveal stories of England at the time of the Norman Conquest. Participants will read some of the stories, and then fill in a questionnaire to say what they thought of them. Many of the coins currently belong to museums, so the questionnaire will also investigate how the museums could use their coins to present interesting displays about the Norman period. The study is part of ongoing PhD research.

About the researcher

My background is in archaeology and for many years I was a museum curator in the UK Midlands. I am particularly interested in historic coins, especially those of the medieval period. I am now researching for my PhD at the University of Nottingham, looking at the coins of the early Norman kings of England, and at the relationship between the coins and the museums that look after them.
