The impact of a novel supplement on exercise performance and recovery

17 May 2023

Participants complete 3 x 5km running time trials (5TT) on a treadmill (1 x familiarisation and 2 x experimental). The 2 experimental 5TTs are separated by a 4 week supplementation period.
Following the 2nd 5TT, participants do a drop jump exercise protocol and have measures of muscle recovery assessed for 3 consecutive morning.
Supplements are either SCFAs or placebo.

31 days to complete the experimental part of the study BUT only a total of ~10 hrs of lab contact time split across 6 visits.

Requirements

  • - Male or female aged between 18 and 40 years old.
  • - Active and regularly perform structured exercises, with a minimum of at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75–150 min of vigorous-intensity physical activity a week, plus 2 or more days a week of muscle-strengthening activities. Alternatively, they may participate in multiple sports/forms of activity; or training regularly three times per week (e.g., team sports players).
  • - Must be able to complete 5-km of running in less than 30 minutes for males and less than 35 minutes for females without stopping to walk or rest (assessed on familiarisation visit).
  • - Must be able to complete exhaustive drop jump and counter movement jump exercise.
  • - Must be able to provide blood samples via venepuncture.
  • -Must be comfortable taking supplements orally in pill capsule form
