The CoolBAT study

This study aims to increase knowledge of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in overweight individuals.
BAT produces heat by using the body’s white fat stores, and activation may help people avoid becoming overweight.

19 January 2024 Requirements- You are willing and able to give informed consent for participation in the study.
- You are over 20 and under 46 years old
- Your BMI is between 25 and 36kg/m2 (see link to BMI calculator below)
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are not taking any medications that may effect brown adipose tissue (eg: B blockers)
- You do not have any of the following medical conditions: cardiovascular disease, endocrine disorder, kidney disease, heart disease, or liver disease
- You do not have a family history of sudden cardiac death
- You are able to have an MRI – that means you must not have any metal in your body and are not claustrophobic

- BMI between 20 and 40kg/m2
- Must be healthy (have no medical conditions or need to take medications)
- Non smokers (includes the use of e-cigarettes, nicotine patches or nicotine gum)
- No gastrointestinal disorders, including IBS
- Not currently dieting to reduce or control weight using meal replacements
- Not following a prescription or restrictive diet such as low FODMAP
