Exploring women's experiences of counselling for difficult/traumatic birth
25 January 2024
- Are you mother to a child 1-5 years old?
- Did you experience the birth as difficult/traumatic?
- Did you have counselling afterwards? What difference did it make?
- Would you like to tell your story?
This study offers a chance for women who did NOT meet the threshold for a PTSD diagnosis, or NHS perinatal mental health services, to tell their stories. This will aid our understanding of how best to support a greater number of mothers during this potentially vulnerable time.

About the researcher
I'm a doctoral student on the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology & Psychotherapy by Professional Studies (DCPsych) at Metanoia Institute, London. I'm conducting research to explore the stories/experiences of mothers who accessed counselling after childbirth they found to be difficult or traumatic (but who did not meet the threshold for PTSD diagnoses or NHS perinatal mental health services).
My supervisor is Dr Hannah Cruttenden.
